Rankings are so fickle, aren’t they? For whatever reason, I’m number one when you do a search for “emerging church” in iTunes podcasts. I’m sure that’ll last a day (though I’m not even sure how long I’ve been at that position).

So one of the least prolific, albeit the first, emerging church podcasts has decent visibility.

I have three more episodes nearly “in the can,” I just need to record intros. Tomorrow I’ll be putting up a conversation with John O’Keefe. Next week will be a discussion with Scot McKnight. I’ll follow that up either with a solo podcast (because I have some issues I’ve really been burning to talk about) or a conversation I had with Len Hjalmarson. The conversation with Len is definitely coming, I’m just trying to space out the podcasts by at least a week… because it’s my goal to make this podcast weekly, and I know that means I need to be ahead, because there will definitely be times when I don’t do a podcast for a few weeks at a time!

R. Scott Smith author of Truth and the New Kind of Christian, which I reviewed here, will be joining me for a convo focused mostly on the topic of his book. We’ve had a friendly exchange in the comments portion of my review (he’s let me know he’ll be responding again soon), and it’ll be great to be able to actually talk rather than just an exchange of writings.

I may end up bumping up Scott and I’s conversation to make it more fresh to the posting of my review.

If you’d like to link to the podcast, the link to the podcast category is: http://www.alanhartung.com/blog/index.php/category/podcasts/

Of course, you can just link to http://www.alanhartung.com/ as well.

The RSS feed for the podcast is http://feeds.feedburner.com/perspective-podcast/ if you’d like to subscribe. You can also click on that link, and it’ll give you an html version of the feed with all of the episodes of A Different Perspective.

So after being the first (I just like saying it, doesn’t mean much) emerging church podcast, you’d think all the technical bugs would be worked out. Not so much.

Today I recorded an excellent conversation I had with Scot McKnight for a part of the discussion series I’ve been promising. I thought the software I was using (Audio Hijack Pro) would just record us when I had it set to “ichat” and it turns out… it only recorded Scot. Fortunately, I was mostly asking questions and he wasn’t using a headset so there’s the faint rumor of my voice… so I’ll be able to dub me back in and have a pretty good finished product when it’s all said and done. Probably actually better than what it would’ve been with the echo, but a lot more time to get the finished product to you all. The convo is definitely worth it. There’s a reason his blog has become so popular…. he says a lot of great, thought-provoking stuff.

Then I also had a convo with John O’Keefe of Ginkworld. We also had a great conversation, but another technical gaffe using skype. This time I made sure both of us were recorded. This is more of a hardware problem, and it is only a minor annoyance. Using the internal mic works fine for me when I’m just recording myself using other software, but evidently Audio Hijack Pro paired with Skype kicks up the hard drive… and the internal mic picks it up as an annoying buzz… I have a couple more convos lined up this week (yep, I’m getting ahead on podcasts for a change), and I’m hoping to be getting another mic to use. Then all the tech problems will be solved…

My The Idolatry of Truth post has gotten a lot of attention due to its being linked on an anti-emerging church site, Slice of Laodicea.

I’ve responded both on the Slice site and on the blog here through the comments, but I felt that a response in my own voice was appropriate. Please listen to the whole thing. I’m a little harsh in the first minute because of my reaction to some of the Slice commenters, but it is an honest telling of how I feel. Please take the time to listen to the podcast if you’re interested in this issue at all.

So regular visitors to the site should notice some major changes. I’ve switched from b2evolution to WordPress. The reason for the switch is relatively simple. While b2evo has an incredible developer community, WordPress’s community is all that and more. The main feature that sets b2evo apart is the ability to run multiple blogs off of one install, and I didn’t need that feature.

I also wanted to get more familiar with WordPress, as I am reccomending it more and more to hosting clients. Which means they’ll probably be asking questions, and I want to have more experience working with this excellent software.

Sorry to be a pest, but please make the following changes (I do have redirects set up, but some day I’ll take them down…):

The main url has changed from http://www.alanhartung.com/blog/ to just the root: http://www.alanhartung.com/. If you link to this site, or have it bookmarked, could you change that?

If you directly link to the podcast category, that URL is now: http://www.alanhartung.com/blog/index.php/category/podcasts/. This one’s the most important to change, as the redirect isn’t ideal (the old address was index.php?cat=16 and the redirect just looks at “index.php”).

Other major changes, if you’re reading this in an RSS reader, I’m now using feedburner, and the old RSS feeds just redirect to feedburner for now. So if you could update your feed readers with these new feeds, that would be swell:

Main RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/ADifferentPerspective
Comments RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/ADifferentPerspectiveComments
Podcast RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/perspective-podcast

Amazingly, I was able to configure WordPress so all the URL’s from old posts are the same! So no worries if you’ve linked to posts of mine, the links still work just fine.

I like it. Actually, I haven’t had much time to give it a thorough going through, but my podcast is already there, so I’m happy I don’t have to submit it to get it into the system.

Several of you have giving me repeated reminders that I haven’t actually done a podcast in awhile… and I appreciate it. I really do. I’ve had a lot going on and a million other excuses, but the fact that people are asking me for more means a lot. It means, one, people are listening. Two, at least some that listen like it.

So, I’m going to try to bang one out this afternoon. I’ve been keeping notes on several topics. I’m probably going to start making the podcasts about 20-30 instead of 30-45. This will also help in getting them out more regularly…

More often than not, critics of the emerging church smack the “liberal” label on those engaging the questions of today. While I believe looking at political beliefs there’s a tendency towards liberal thoughts in some areas, the liberal versus conservative angle is not the best framing for the emerging church. Right versus left just doesn’t neatly classify most of us.

A better way to look at emerging churchers (and this obviously won’t work for every one) would be to couch our beliefs in terms of freedom versus oppression. Our concern for social justice issues stems not from a political mindset but from a recognition of oppression. The reason Darfur is a prominent subject among many emerging church bloggers is the oppression going on.

And if some of us are not pro-Bush, the issue may have less to do with typical right versus left issues and more to do with a belief that Bush’s regime oppresses voices which run counter to the Bush agenda. It may be that while we believe democracy is the best form of government, we do not believe any form of government should be forced upon a nation. It is a form of oppression to force even a good thing on persons who do not want it or ask for it (or willing to fight for it themselves).

And what about Scripture? Aren’t we in the emerging church just a bunch of wanna be liberal theologians? I think what gets to most of us about the “conservative” scholars isn’t so much the content of what they believe as the way they force their interpretations on others. It is another form of oppression, and we seek for freedom from the tyranny of conservative scholars (not all included, but the group as a whole tend towards a form of absolutism that silences competing voices).

Because of unhealthy and prudish views on sex, we’ve become more open to questions about sexuality. It’s not that we want the “liberal” answer, but that we are looking for answers to be had without the force of guilt and social stigma declaring what is right and wrong with our sexuality.

Of course, most conservatives think any one is a liberal who does not line up with their conservatism. But at least for me, when I’m labeled a liberal… I’m just going to try to explain that it isn’t a liberal agenda driving my thoughts, it’s an agenda of freedom from oppression. If Christ’s yoke is easy and his burden is light, then perhaps that Christ’s agenda as well.

iTunes 4.9 came out, and it spurred me into action. At least partial action.

I’m still working on the Human Sexuality podcast. It’s been a bit more complex then I expected.

But, a friend told me I was third under Christianity in the new iTunes podcast directory… so I thought I better get something up. Seeing how some well-intentioned (and appreciated) person submitted me to the iTunes directory. But they used the wrong feed… the one with just podcasts should have been submitted to iTunes. So while I get that corrected, nothing is showing up under my excellent placement.

So I decided to do a quick podcast which is generally… an overview of the Human Sexuality podcast coming next and also a brief overview of the show and why it exists.

I’m working on my next podcast, “Human Sexuality.” A long time ago, in a web site far, far… okay, it was this website, but it feels like a long time ago, I polled you all and Human Sexuality was the number two choice for a podcast topic. I decided to do number 1 and 2. “Radical Church Structure” was the last podcast, and now I’m trying to put my thoughts together on “Human Sexuality.”

In my opinion, sexuality is at the top of the list of hot button issues facing the Church. Unfortunately, my podcast will not offer any definitive answers for any one (at least I’d be surprised if it did). This is not an issue to be solved, as I do not feel we will be able to find a unifying view of human sexuality. However, the conversation about sex needs to include some perspectives I’m going to try to cover.

Number 1: The nature of sex

More specifically, I’m going to take a closer look at the spirituality of sex as well as the physicality.

Number 2: The emotions of sex

Out here in southern cal, there are a wide variety of attitudes towards sex. It’s allowed me to question some of the age-old arguments on sexual development from a conservative viewpoint. At the same time, I don’t come to the same answers as many of my friends and associates here in Los Angeles. The emotions of sex often play out differently depending on the context of the act.

Number 3: The purpose of sex

While talked about a lot, I think I can offer a different perspective on this aspect of human sexuality as well.

Number 4: Sex in the Bible

I’ve got a feeling this part isn’t going to be a big friend-maker for me…

I’m going to try, to the best of my ability, to take head on both conservative and liberal views of Scripture and sex. I think there’s a deeper point we often miss by placing the sexual relationship in a paradigm which is governed mainly by rules. But my freeing approach doesn’t result in the freedom many would like in regards to sex…

_________________

Well, I wanted to throw out a basic outline for ya. I would love feedback and thoughts as I prepare to record this next podcast. Talk to me, tell me something.

Before the final conversion to the mp3 I end up with, that leaves hundreds of segments to piece back together…

I may just record it again. Especially since I fell for Adam Cleaveland’s April Fool’s joke…

I reference the chance it was a joke in the podcast, and it is only a brief mention any way. But with the other problems, I may just redo the whole stinking thing. I apologize for the delay.
