A Different Perspective

Faith, Art, Politics, and the Emerging Church

a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

Awhile back, I started a proposal on a book about Jesus. Like that’s never been done before…

Well, everyone feels their perspective is unique (unless of course philosophically you believe no one’s perspective is truly unique), and I aspired to write a “Christology for the church, by the church, and in the church.”

What I mean by that last statement is that I wanted a theology on Christ for the common man, not academia. It’s not that this hasn’t ever been done, but that I have yet to find one which I resonate with so fully it negates my own desire to write my own. I published a sample chapter awhile back (you might be able to find it by searching this blog for “A Different Kind of God”), and I’m not sure that chapter would even stay in its current form. There was interest at the time, but life got in the way.

Since reading a couple of the comments on my recent post on being “in love” or not being “in love” with Jesus, I’ve been thinking more about my theology regarding Christ. And I’m thinking about fleshing out the work I started a few years ago and seeing where it leads me.

So, a couple of questions… Is it completely pretentious to think I could write a book about Jesus which adds anything to the vast volumes of work preceding me? Of all the things I could write about (my church structure writings get passed around, linked to, quoted, etc. MUCH MORE than anything I ever write which is more theologically minded), is that what I should spend my time on?

And most importantly, who would Jesus bomb? Okay, that last one was a joke.

But seriously, any thoughts on the subject from the few readers I have left in my extremely diminished blog?

  1. Y’know, I hate to admit this, but Driscoll’s Vintage Jesus looks interesting–entertaining at least. Probably not the book you’d write at all, but pretty stinkin’ funny…

  2. Good question. I wish I had a good answer. I’ve read so many books about Jesus, it would take something from a completely different perspective to get my attention on this one.

  3. All I can advise you is do is to treat Jesus as a real, live, in-the-now Person. Too many people talk about what Jesus “did” 2,000 years ago and not what He is doing right now in the lives of everyday people. If Jesus is real, then He’s having an effect on the world today. What is it?
