I’ve been looking for a new place to live. I can’t take Anaheim any more. I feel like I’m living my life on the 5 freeway. Things are hopping for me now in about every area of my life, and most of my life is in L.A.
Apartment hunting is about my least favorite thing to do in the world. I’ve had several close calls where I was the number 2 guy. Which often isn’t bad considering the good rooms have 10-20 people wanting them! Yeah, I’m not looking for my own apartment, I would have to spend at least a thousand dollars a month for that (unless I go with a craphole studio in bad parts of L.A.).
So I meet this guy with an apartment to rent, and it’s a great apartment. He’s really cool, and I’d get along with him great as a roommate I can tell. But he has a cat. I hung out there tonight to see if or how allergic I was, and at first, I was ready to say it didn’t matter that I was mildly allergic. I wanted to move so badly, it clouded my judgment.
Later that night at a casting director workshop, I ran into a guy I know from the theater in Anaheim (www.chancetheater.com) that I’ve acted in many times. He happens to live in Burbank, which is much more palatable for an actor than Anaheim. I ask him if he knows anyone looking for a roommate, and he says, “Actually I think I am.”
It turns out at the end of April they’re giving an old roommate the boot, and it looks very likely I’ll be moving in to that spot. At a cheaper rent than I’ve been looking at for other places in the area! And I’ll know someone I’m living with before moving in… I like it a lot.
It’s not official yet. But I tilted the odds in my favor when I mentioned that I’ve been wanting to buy a TV, and Costco has a Vizio 42″ Plasma for $999… And because I was expecting to have to pay first month, last month, and a security deposit and with this deal I’d only have first month and a small security deposit, I can pretty much by the TV out of money I had set aside for moving.
And before any of you chastise me for spending too much on a TV set, keep in mind that in the past 5 years the only thing I’ve bought for myself that had nothing to do with work that could be even close to being considered a luxury is an iPod. I am not an extravagant spender by any means of the imagination
So hopefully in the middle of next week I’ll get official word that I’m going to be a resident of Burbank, California! I was helped a little bit with the patience thing, as I was almost ready to jump into a situation I would’ve regretted (for health reasons only, again it was a great apartment and a great potential roommate), but I’m sure glad I didn’t jump at a couple of the other subpar rooms which weren’t in such high demand!
Before you pull the trigger on the Vizio, check out the Sceptre 42″ at http://www.costo.com for the same price. It’s $300 off right now and I think it’s probably a better TV. Just bought one myself.
Good luck with the apartment hunting. It’s just a whole different world than the midwest. You could have a 2,000 square foot house in Ohio for what you guys pay a month in rent for a studio apartment. Only drawback, you have to live in Ohio
Peace,
Brian
