It’s Fat Tuesday, everyone.
The day where in many catholic countries and regions the religious let it all hang out before the Lent season of sacrifice.
So… I’m interested to know if there’s a positive spiritual spin on Mardi Gras that goes beyond the usual rhetoric I hear denouncing it (it shows that Lent is a rote religious practice done by people whose hearts are not with God, it’s decadence at its worst, etc.).
My personal thought… celebration is a discipline we often forget. There’s a time to be somber and reflective and a time to celebrate. If you look at mardi gras as a time to sin before being spiritual, you probably miss the point of its original intention (I’m of course assuming there was an intention beyond mad partying before we get all ashy and such). But I’m not sure about all this. Anyone out there have a thorough knowledge of fat tuesday they’d like to share?
