A Different Perspective

Faith, Art, Politics, and the Emerging Church

a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

Prison Break is not a show I watch regularly. I think I’ve seen it three times, so I don’t know if it’s a habit of the show to copy something so blatantly. It was done pretty well, so I don’t know why I’m so bothered by it.

Did anyone else watch Prison Break this week?

I don’t know the show too well, I’m unsure of the person’s background, though I’m assuming he’s one of the people who broke out of prison (I could be wrong). He’s Puerto Rican, and he’s traveling in Mexico trying to get to Ixtapa. But he has no money, and he gets kicked off of the bus. A man he was talking to on the bus lived at the stop where he got kicked off, and told him if he could cook dinner he could stay the night.

He proceeds to steal the man’s car and get caught. The man tells the police he’s glad they caught him, because he forgot to give him gas money for the trip. The man then sends him on his way with money and the car. He tells him to find “grace.”

Maybe if I followed the show more, I wouldn’t have been so quick to spot the Les Mis elements and been more involved with the man’s story. But as it is, I saw it coming and was sitting back thinking, “I can’t believe they’re doing this…”

Well, I suppose if this guy is central to the show (he didn’t seem to be, but like I said, not that familiar), and he has a Jean Valjean type conversion and ends up totally transformed and becomes a major player because of his transformation, my bad feelings will be unjustified. But as it is, it seems like they abused a powerful scene from Victor Hugo for a little sidebar.

  1. Alan,

I spotted that Les Mis reference, too. It was way too similar to the scene between Jean Valjean and the priest. But, it was only a snippet of the show. I’m pretty sure it won’t carry on beyond last night’s episode.

  2. THe guy in question is a main character. He is one of the original escapees who got separated from the Lincoln and Michael, when they went back for the doctor. They were all supposed to fly to Mexico to escape but the Michael did not want to leave without the dr., as I recall. So this guy went alone with the pilot, and parachuted into Mexico.

I too am curious as to what will happen to him. That was an interesting turn of events (just when you think there are no more turns that can happen).

It is kind of an addicting show, but probably only if you have been with it from the beginning.

  3. There was also another reference to yet another story. I’m not sure if it was in this episode or not. I’m a regular Prison Break viewer.
When Haywire (the mentally ill convict) is getting on his raft to get to Holland, he starts talking to his dog “Larry I’ve done a verry bad thing.”
This really reminded me of the “Of Mice and Men” story in which theres also a mentally ill character and one of their names is Larry.
I actually like that they kinda weave little references to different things into the plot, makes me feel special. lol
