Scot McKnight posted a few days ago on Faith and doubt. As I often experience with McKnight, he puts into words thoughts I’ve had which I haven’t been able to get out in a way that would make sense to anyone else.
Faith is not the polar opposite of doubt, and we shouldn’t treat it as such. Doubt is a part of our humanity. We can’t escape it. Check out a little of what Scot wrote or click the link for the whole post:
Faith and Doubt: “I have of late received e-mails from some who are facing severe doubts about their life and about the Christian faith, and I have no capacity here to dissolve doubts by cooking them dry on some apologetic stove — by and large I don’t think doubts are dissolved so much as they are, by faith, put on our shoulders to be carried along with us. In other words, I think doubt and faith are not opposites; faith sometimes is what demonstrates doubt. Or, faith sometimes demonstrates doubt.”
