Church Structure Defines the Message

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

If our ideas do not play out practically in how our local churches (faith communities or whatever else we’re calling them nowadays) operate, we run the risk of dividing by the same standards as the established church. For example, when a sermon is still the center of a worship service which is in turn the [...]

Les Miserables on Prison Break?

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

Prison Break is not a show I watch regularly. I think I’ve seen it three times, so I don’t know if it’s a habit of the show to copy something so blatantly. It was done pretty well, so I don’t know why I’m so bothered by it. Did anyone else watch Prison Break this week? [...]

I’d read tidbits here and there about whether a seminary is like a church, but I hadn’t been paying close enough attention to understand why this question was being asked. So I read Michael Spencer’s blog post and it all makes sense. Certain portions of the internet are abuzz with discussions regarding the termination of [...]

Faith and Doubt

Tuesday, January 23rd, 2007

Scot McKnight posted a few days ago on Faith and doubt. As I often experience with McKnight, he puts into words thoughts I’ve had which I haven’t been able to get out in a way that would make sense to anyone else. Faith is not the polar opposite of doubt, and we shouldn’t treat it [...]

PowerBook Giving Up the Ghost

Saturday, January 20th, 2007

My PowerBook may be giving up the ghost. Very sad, but expected, since the AppleCare just ran out January 1! I think the logic board may have partially gotten fried by a power surge. That’s my best guess, any way. The powerbook won’t charge, even though the light sometimes comes on the connector. So I [...]

A few posts back, I requested input on children’s ministry in churches which are using structures best described as “alternative” to the establishment. I didn’t get much of a response (a couple of others who are curious like me!), and I’m still interested in hearing what you all are doing. Perhaps if you know of [...]

http://www.alanhartung.com/podcasts/a-different-perspective-19.mp3 This is one of the most simple podcasts I’ve put together, as I recorded my sermon from New Year’s Eve 2006 at the Church of God at Bethel in Fort Wayne, Indiana! There’s just a brief intro then the sermon, so no need for a timeline on this one. Subscribe to A Different Perspective [...]

No Real Postmoderns?

Thursday, January 11th, 2007

I see many churches wanting to reach out to the ‘Emergent Generation’ or postmodern crowd. You can read all kinds of books and attend workshops on this topic. Church planters read books, blog, chat, and research their target to the hilt. Then, they set out to reach these people with edgy websites, and other promotional [...]

Who Your Friends Are

Monday, January 8th, 2007

I threw up all over my friend’s carpet last night, after he let me stay because I was sick. He took pretty good care of me. I could barely do anything I was so sick. I’m feeling better today, but I’m nowhere near 100%.
