a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

This is incredible. I can’t describe the shock that I have… Three teams had to lose and the Chiefs had to win. The three teams that had to lose were ALL playing at home. All of those teams lost, but it took two overtime games to accomplish it! I think some more hair grayed today :D

So many strange plays contributed to the Chiefs going to the playoffs. It started with last week’s missed extra point by the Bengals. I had wanted the Bengals to win, because I thought the Jets were going to lose to Miami. It turns out that if the Bengals had won, the Chiefs would have been eliminated from the playoffs last week. So a strange missed extra point was a major factor in the Chiefs heading to the postseason.

Then today… that Steelers-Bengals game was just filled with strange plays and strange calls and missed calls. Then the missed 39-yard field goal… Did you see it? Really? It was right down the middle and it knuckled outside.

When the Broncos-49ers went to OT, I really thought it was over. I didn’t think the niners were going to be able to pull it out in OT. In fact, I had told my friends I was going to meet them at 7:15 EST to watch Rocky Balboa. I called my dad on the way to the movie theater and had him feed me the play by play! I half-watched Rocky, half-listened to my Dad’s play-by-play of the OT. I started to fear that game was going to end in a tie! Which would eliminate KC… the only game of the three that HAD to be a loss and not a tie was the Denver game. Then all of a sudden, the niners pushed it down the field and kicked the winning field goal… I walked to the back of the movie theater (the hallway behind where I couldn’t be heard) and whispered some ecstatic jibberish to my dad. I couldn’t be a happier football fan.

And of course, as a die-hard Chiefs fan, I can’t stand the Denver Broncos. It makes it all that much more sweeter that their loss put the Chiefs in the playoffs!

  1. So, what I’m trying to figure out here is how your return to the pulpit influenced this crazy series of events. Any ideas?

  2. Heh.

When I got out of watching Rocky Balboa last night, there’s a guy standing in the lobby wearing a Chiefs jacket and mock turtleneck. I tell him congrats, and that I’m a huge Chiefs fan as well. He says, “The only thing I can figure out is that Lamar Hunt died a couple of weeks ago, and he was bugging God so bad to get the Chiefs into the playoffs He made it happen.” :D

Did you seriously see that Cincy kick? It was going right down the middle…

  3. Alan, from a Bengals fan, you’re welcome. That was some weird stuff that got KC into the playoffs this year, a lot of it directly attributable to the play of the Bengals.

Congrats and good luck in the post season…

    Peace,

  4. Brian -

My sincere sympathies go out to you as a Bengals fan. Last year, the Chiefs were 10-6 and became one of only four team in the history of the NFL to win 10 games and not make it into the playoffs. Pittsburgh had the tiebreaker and there were five other teams with 10-6 records or better in the AFC besides Pitt and KC.

Cincy’s got a young, strong team. I’m sure next year a little bit before this time I’ll be worrying about Cincy again…
