A Different Perspective

Faith, Art, Politics, and the Emerging Church

about the podcast/blog

a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

I’m watching a new miniseries special, I think it airs on the Sundance Channel, called One Punk Under God about the son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker, Jay Bakker.

It’s extremely intriguing to see Jay’s perspective on his parents, and his church in Atlanta’s pretty amazing. I dig it.

The relationship Jay has with his wife is interesting, especially if you’re a pastor. She really doesn’t have a lot to do with the church but she supports Jay in it.

The Director (I’m not sure what that title actually means, I think he’s more of an executive director over the business aspects of the church) is a pretty conservative Republican guy, while Jay admits (or at least doesn’t deny) being a Democrat. Jay even said his Director, Stu, probably believes about 45% of what he teaches! It’s an interesting structure for the church.

And there’s one scene where they are talking about hierarchy where you will just die if you’re an emerging church pastor… you’ll know the discussion and the frustrations of trying to work out a non-hierarchical structure…

  1. I just saw the pilot of One Punk Under God on iTunes, and I thought it was a really interesting show. It feels much more like a documentary than a reality TV series, and Jay is very honest when talking about his parents, his father’s legal troubles, and the skeletons trapped in the Bakker closet. The six part mini series starts tonight at nine on The Sundance Channel. You can find more about One Punk here:

I look forward to seeing if Jay is able to mend things with his father in upcoming episodes. Great Start!

  2. Thanks. I downloaded the episode and found it fascinating. Unfortunately, I don’t get the Sundance Channel. So, I’ll have to decide if I want to pay iTunes/Apple $9.99 for the whole series.

  3. I downloaded the season pass on iTunes. The series is interesting, and how they have handled his difficult relationship to his parents, and the healthy one he has cultivated with his adopted circle of friends and followers will be great to watch.

  4. I think that Stu guy is great! TV makes him look fat though.
