Weeds - Weeds, Season 2

Ranking #1 for a search can sure change your stats. Lately, I’m getting inundated with hits for the Showtime show Weeds and the season 2 premiere.

This show has really struck a pop cultural nerve, and I have a few thoughts on why.

The main character is deeply flawed, yet there’s something admirable about her as well. She sacrifices to put her family first, even if that sacrifice is a pretty poor choice.

The show’s writers go out of their way to write quality content. They show the pretty and the ugly about suburban life, and they do it pretty fairly. This show is truly a dramedy… and sometimes, I think “tragedy” is the last half of that combo more than “comedy”… but don’t get me wrong, the show is extremely funny.

The show has likeable characters from varying backgrounds. For example, the accountant (Kevin Nealon) is a pretty staunch Republican, while Nancy Botwin (lead) I’m pretty sure is a liberal. Most of all, the characters are real. It would not surprise me in the least for them to develop a strong Christian character, for example, who does not fall prey to the normal stereotypes.

A lot of people in this country smoke weed. I thought, for adults, it was a California thing. But I was rather surprised to find out back in good ole Indiana, a lot of people I went to high school with are smokers of the wacky tabaccy. It was kind of funny as they just kind of assumed I was a smoker of weed (I wasn’t even in High School!) because everyone does it. I had no idea how pervasive the smoking of marijuana actually was. And, a lot of those smokers see it as a type of guilty pleasure. So watching the cagey situational ethics before them on television, in a strange way, helps them work out their own feelings on the subject.

I could go on, but the above are the main reasons Weeds is so popular that the net is clamoring for news of when the new season will start. It’s August 14th, by the way, on Showtime. And once again, the shows will be available for purchase via iTunes.

  1. “And once again, the shows will be available for purchase via iTunes.”

Do you know if the Season 2 episodes will be avaiable as the show airs or will we have to wait until the season ends to order from iTunes?

  2. If iTunes stays true to form, the shows will be available the day after the episode airs.

There’s been talk about making them available simultaneously with airing. I don’t think that’s going to happen, though.

  3. Any more word on the individual episodes for season 2? Here we are on the 16th, and no download of the first season is available yet :(

I hope they do, I would rather buy them on iTunes than buy showTime.

  4. where are the season two episodes? i live in canada where weeds season two won’t be broadcasted until next month. i was really hoping to be able to buy the episodes the day after or even get a season’s pass, but the episodes are nowhere to be found.

  5. I heard about the new season airing just last week and re-watched the first season, all of which I bought on iTunes. They need to hurry with season 2 because I’m sure they make a killing just from those sales alone, considering the instant gratification you can’t get by waiting another year for the DVD. God, I love the internet.

  6. It is 9 minutes away from being the 18th of August, 4 days after the premier of Weeds and iTunes still hasn’t made the first episode available. I am very annoyed!!

  9. oh no, our precious Weeds is supposed to go to MSN the first week exclusive (though did a search there and it didn’t come up). anyway, Microsoft won’t give us the required player 10 for mac – but they were always so non-universal/friendly in nature and (not as hideous evil as AOL but still…) annoying as all get-out (ever try to uninstall Microsoft Word?). anyway, MSN site can’t compare to Apple ITunes, just like Windows can’t ever seems to match Mac-appeal cause they have a different asthetic. For windows tho think they were offering a temporary intro $20 year rate for viewing their shows – which if that’s the case great deal – HOPEFULLY might get ITunes to chill out on the $2 price per episode, give options.

  10. Ok, I read the comments from people expecting to watch Weeds season two shortly after airing. Well, it’s now 2007 and the second season has concluded. I can find no indication anywhere that season two is available for download in any form. Any news?
