Web Browser Market Share

Gecko-based browsers are now at 37% market share… (Firefox is Gecko-based and would be the most common)

Designers who only check in Internet Explorer should be wary. Believe it or not, there are still quite a few out there!

I don’t know if it’s true, but I’ve heard IE won’t be attached to Vista the way it was too XP. I have heard they might even discontinue Internet Explorer, which would be the best for everyone, imho.

    Why?

I get the “Microsoft is evil… monopoly …bad and so on and so on” thing that some people are into, but a browser is a browser, no? Does it really matter? I’m serious. Educate me…

As a web designer, I can tell you this has nothing to do with the monopoly, evil thing… well, it has something to do with it, but it is just the byproduct.

Microsoft refuses to conform IE to the W3C standards. By creating its own standards, it makes it very difficult on anyone building a website, because some code works on everybody else’s browser while IE uses different code (or none at all) to accomplish the same tasks. Many times, developers have to make JavaScript fixes to make simple (and by the book standards) code work right.

Then there’s also the features that get added much more quickly by open source browsers. The functionality of Firefox leaves IE in the dust. Microsoft is just too big to make changes and crank out upgrades the way Firefox and others can.

So… if Microsoft just dumped it and let Mozilla and others do their thing, it would be best for everybody. They’d have a better image for giving way to a better user experience, hours upon hours would be saved (which means money saved) coding websites, websites would work (many designers don’t check their code in all browsers and platforms… but without IE, it would be rare that what works in one doesnt’ work in another), and the user would have the latest and greatest features in their browser.

  3. Ah! I see! Thanks…I figured there had to be a better reason than Microsoft is evil.

P.S. Feel free to delete this. I know it is annoying to deal with non techies.
