Kansas City Royals : News : Kansas City Royals News
This year’s KC Royals baseball team… may go down in history as the worst major league team ever. Why? Because the GM made some terrible decisions and some unfortunate early injuries.
Mayby my reality television idea isn’t so bad after all. To recap, here’s where the Royals went majorly wrong…
Of all the young promising athletes in the organization, the pitchers got the most attention. The GM decides to use the generous money from the owner (25 million freed up for free agency this year) to get three suspect pitchers. He said he wanted veterans to guide the youngsters… it doesn’t take a mathematician to realize three pitchers in a five-man rotation means you’re completely replacing what you did the year before. A move meant to inspire “competition” did nothing more than show the organization had no confidence in its young talent. Whether that’s true or not, that’s the message that was sent.
The only, and I mean the ONLY good acquisition was Grudzielanek. He’s been a quality fielder and a solid bat all year so far. The GM, Allard Baird, should’ve been looking for only TWO players with the money he was given to play with: a star pitcher and a star bat. Had he acquired those two players, this season would look a lot different. The young guys would believe they were in the majors because they were good enough… not just because they happened to be in the worst organization in baseball… and the older players would’ve led the way.
Instead, we got a bunch of subpar free agents which showed the lack of support for the young talent in the Royals organization. Please, I know Mr. Baird is a nice guy, but fire him now and get someone who will make smart baseball moves. The former GM of the Royals has been with the Braves organization for the last decade or so… what a difference a quality GM can make.
If you aren’t going to hire someone good, give it to a fan and make a reality television show. He can’t do any worse than Baird, and maybe the attention on the Royals would spark the much needed fire…
Okay, enough baseball rant.
Edit: I lied. I need to extend the rant a little more… With a team of such abysmal batting averages… why did they not play their future star, Justin Huber, more? He’s a solid bat, but instead Bell puts in guys who are barely hitting their weight to be the DH! Bell’s a good baseball guy… but I think he’s so frustrated right now he’s not seeing the big picture. Huber will be a star if he’s given the chance.
