a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

The Kansas City Royals picked up Tony Graffanino on waivers from the Boston Red Sox today. I liked Graff when he played for KC, but I feel like McEwing should have been given a shot. He’s been extremely hot all spring, and he deserved a chance.

Graff should be a regular second baseman and not a backup. The Royals don’t need him. Maybe his contract was such a bargain, it worked, I don’t know. What I do know is that except for one nearly Cinderella season, the Royals have not been good since George Brett retired. Some of this is the fault of free agency, but it is also the result of poor management. How long, exactly, can a team be in a youth movement?

This year, they bring in a couple of veteran pitchers who are pretty much of the same caliber as their younger pitchers who now won’t have a chance. They seasoned several pitchers last year, and now, when they have not really built up the offense enough to make a serious pennant run, they bring in three average major leaguers to the rotation. I’m not wasting my money this year with the mlb.tv package. The last couple of years has taught me watching my team on a regular basis is not an uplifting experience.

So I’ll watch them when they play Anaheim at Anaheim. I might head to a sports bar occasionally or a friend’s house who buys the mlb package, but unless management proves me wrong about their incompetence with a stellar season… I’m sitting this one out.

I wish football began in April.
