Although I think it was pretty much clear from the time Sayid tortured him that “Henry Gale” was an “Other” on Lost, it became crystal clear tonight that he was not who he said he was. In fact, Henry Gale is the name of a man buried where his “wife” should have been buried.

Now, with J.J. Abrams at the helm, you can be sure there are more twists and turns in store for our viewing pleasure.
Some possibilities:
The man claiming to be Henry Gale had amnesia, and so he developed a persona around the name of a man he found dead… possibly from the balloon accident (the balloon was stuck in a tree, so the man could have died in the crash landing).
He is an “Other” who ran away from them, but he knew he would not be trusted if he gave his true identity to the plane crash survivors.
He’s from the Dharma Initiative and was checking in to see how things were going. He could have been quite shocked to find so many people living around the hatch and chose to make up an identity. Perhaps the secretive nature of the project required they know very little, and he did not want to reveal that he knows much about the hatch.
Of course, the Dharma Initiative could also be something the “Others” are associated with, and thus Henry could have knowledge about the hatch and still be an Other. Interesting that the walls came up shortly after Henry, or whoever you want to call him, punched in the numbers.
