A Different Perspective

Faith, Art, Politics, and the Emerging Church

a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

Once again, the networks find a way to kill a great show.

CBS is content with its almost exclusively crime drama prime-time schedule, and they kill a great show after just three weeks.

Love Monkey lagged in ratings because it was going up in a difficult time slot (the 10 PM slot usually reserved for more violent or titular shows… and they were competing against an established Law and Order) and possibly because of the terrible title. I never liked it. I guess it was the title of the book the series was based off of, but a new title probably could have gone a long way with this show.

The writing was incredible, the characters interesting, and the chemistry between the leads and supporting amazing. A nice world was created for this TV show, and the issues we face in love and life were addressed through the story of Tom Farrell – Great at the music biz, terrible at love.

Without a miracle, we won’t be finding out what happens to Tom and company. You can thank CBS for giving such support to their new show so as to cancel it after three episodes. Word of mouth was building. I know I had two friends watching it with me.

  1. that’s too bad, I watched the show once, only half-heartedly, but it seemed like it had promise.
I think CBS should hire you and me to make it’s programming decisions :)

  2. Wendy – I upgraded WordPress, and all of a sudden comments had to be moderated! Sorry I didn’t get to this until now, I didn’t know you commented.

We should send in our resumes.. wait, that probably won’t work, let’s just send them a list of quality shows they’ve canceled, and then tell them we should be their programming directors!

  3. I loved that show and was looking forward to each and every second! I’m still depressed that it was cancelled! I agree when you said that Law and Order is hard to compete with, (p.s. i hate Law&Order too!)but we’re forgetting that they weren’t just competing with Law and Order but also the Winter Olympics as well! CBS really needs to consider these angles as well and not just simply boot a show off after 3 episodes. I mean in this case three episodes isn’t even enough time to get your friends hooked (beleive me all my friends and I were going to get together to watch the 4th episode)!P.S. Teddy Geiger’s album out soon (Wayne!)!!!

  4. What is with the “hit show” concept? I watch very little TV because it all SUCKS, just like hit music SUCKS. Thank God we still have other music to listen to. That’s kind of what this show was about. I guess CBS couldn’t handle it’s own reality. It would be nice if another network would pick it up. It would be nice if there was a network that didn’t SUCK.

  5. In this day and age of copycat television, Love Monkey was just too different and too good. Why do the networks kill the best shows? At least with “My-So-Called-Life”, we got one whole season. Canceling Love Monkey after only three episodes is an unfortunate waste of a great show – and we all know how hard it is to find good shows on TV. Shame on you, CBS for having no vision nor foresight.

It’s a shame they cancelled it.

  7. I loved the show Love Monkey. I had missed Tom C ever since Ed went off the air (another great show). I loved the chemistry all of the guys on the show seemed to have. I thought perhaps it was on hiatus because of the Olympics. Then when they were over, I could still not find Love Monkey. They certainly did not give the show very long to catch on with the public.

  8. Let me say first of all…I can’t believe the show was cancelled…secondly, cancelled so quickly! What is CBS thinking…… Everyone I’ve talked to that actually watched the show liked it. I agree with you regarding the name. I know at least a dozen people who skipped the show just because of the name. Here in the midwest, heart of the bible belt I guess that was to be expected. Maybe if enough people contact CBS they will bring the show back for another try, one can hope…….

  10. I am not surprised it was cancelled CBS
has been doing that for years with good programs
I just cannot take those serious murder, cop shows, nor the reality shows.
They do not consider the viewers at all.
    Not now not ever.

  11. It is just like CBS to cancel a good show, Joan of Arcadia was a good show too and they replaced it with the stupid Ghost Whisperer. I will not watch CBS for any new shows they just cancel the good ones. Teri

  12. How could they have spent as much time and money as they did pumping up this show and then take it off after 3 episodes? I admit the first week there was something I kept switching back and forth from (cant remember what now but there was something, lol) but the second week had me right there and I was anxiously awaiting the episode rumored to have John Mellencamp loan his guitar to Wayne. At least let us see whats been taped already!
