Ehren Kruger writes fantastic screenplays, and The Brother’s Grimm is no exception. A highly entertaining flic with a great storyline to boot. The acting performances are way above average, and Heath Ledger impressed me enough to move him out of the “just a pretty face who doesn’t suck too bad” camp. He can act, and he proves it in this tome.
Terry Gilliam’s a genius, and his touch shines through. I saw the movie last night, and for a nice bonus, the Creative Screenwriting magazine I purchased yesterday had an interview with Kruger. He shared how Gilliam added much to the rewrites with excellent input and direction. Gilliam made it funnier, and gave more punch to the entire feel of the movie.
The relationship between the German and the French threw an interesting twist to the movie. A lot of the conflict stems from this, and it brings out nice, clean, believable shifts in the action.
As with any horror/thriller drama, there are certainly some cheese moments. I found them few and far between in Grimm, and well-placed and forgivable when they did appear.
Brother’s Grimm exceeds expectations, and should be one you hit at the theaters instead of waiting for DVD.
