a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

If the guy really did this, I’m all for embarrassing the crap out of him and anyone else who may think about masturbating and/or flashing people on subways…

However, I have to admit to feeling this whole thing and the press it has received smacks more than a little of punishment for a crime he hasn’t been tried for.

What if this woman is a friend of this guy’s ex-girlfriend. She snaps a picture of him, and then fabricates the story. Perhaps she’s a friend that the guy had only met at social occasions and wouldn’t really recognize.

Far-fetched, I know, but I’ve had some crazy ex’s, and to think they could get press like this when it’s just their word against… well, this guy doesn’t even have a word or a side. You think even if he knows he would come out and tell the truth? If he’s innocent, he’ll just be hiding out hoping it blows over.

Of course, I tend to actually believe this woman really saw what she said she did. I’m just not hot on actual news agencies picking this up and convicting the man with embarassment. The “what if he didn’t do it” factor looms very large here.
