In a recent thread on THEOOZE, we’ve been discussing the way people judge attractiveness.
At the extreme risk of sounding cold, I want to post my thoughts on the whole debate.
Almost overwhelmingly, when an “unattractive” person by the culture’s standards gets upset about being unattractive, it is because a person who is deemed attractive by the culture’s standards doesn’t find them attractive.
Rarely (though sadly it happens), is the anger ever lashed out becasue someone else who is unattractive won’t go out with them.
I’m not supporting the status quo of our very appearance-oriented culture, but I do want to point out that the attitude keeps the “unattractive” from noticing many who may not shelve out the same bias that is currently hurting them.
I’m not letting “attractive” people off the hook, either. Looks fade, and we will all lose the glory of our youth, no matter how great that glory was or is. I guess I’m just sick and tired of people bitching about pretty people not being attracted to them. Give it a rest. I’ve been on both sides of the fence, myself.
I’m just now getting back into a healthy shape (which is my biggest reason for changing my appearance). While I definitely have on my internal radar what I consider “hot,” I know that what I am attracted to for a potential relationship goes much, much deeper. I’m not as unbiased as I would like to be, but I know it is very possible for a girl who isn’t as “pretty” by the world’s standards to turn my head and make me take notice.
And one last thing, when I hear a girl do a preemptive strike about how she’s not pretty enough for me or whatever, I lose whatever possible interest I may have had. Don’t take your low self-esteem issues out on me by trying to manipulate me into assessing your “other” qualities… because by doing that, I did assess another quality: your manipulation by attempting to guilt me into thinking I should be attracted to you.
Believe it or not, this rant wasn’t sparked by any current situation. I just have a strong “different perspective” on this one that I’ve had for awhile
