A Different Perspective

Faith, Art, Politics, and the Emerging Church

about the podcast/blog

a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

I was talking with Spencer Burke yesterday, and I found out D.A. Carson’s going after the “emerging church” crowd. I guess he really took Spencer’s book, Making Sense of Church to task.

The thing most interesting to me, is that Carson seems to be upset that we’re not willing to play by the established church rules. I guess he feels the modern rational approach is the only valid one, and we’re just not playing fair since we don’t take that route.

I don’t know how I missed this the first time around, because it’s been posted about quite a bit.

Andrew Jones posted about this, and since he’s heard more of the talks than I have, I recommend you click the title link above and check out his post.

The really good news is that there are now such a significant number of people desiring change in the church that the establishment is being forced to react. That makes me happy. Not because we’ve pissed anyone off, but because at least some sort of dialogue will take place out of this. Communication has to start somewhere, and maybe Carson will set off a conversation which could lead to substantial change and awareness that a growing segment of God’s church is not happy with the establishment.

  1. How did you get an advance copy of Carson’s book? As far as I know it doesn’t come out until the end of April. How can you characterize Carson’s work without reading it?

Just Curious. Unless you’ve taken a class from him, had a discussion with him, or heard him lecture somewhere, I’m don’t think you’ve heard directly from the Horses’ mouth.

I listened to a speech he made, not read or commented about anything from a book. I think if you do a search for D.A. Carson and Emerging Church you’ll find links to the talks referenced.

So the stuff I commented on was directly from the horse’s mouth :D
