As I blogged yesterday, I had a great read out of Shaped by the Word. Thinking about spiritual formation spurred a great conversation (sitting on the beach in Venice :]). Sometimes, articulating your thoughts help you process your own beliefs. I think this is part of the reason blogging has taken off. Not only do we get to hear from so many different people, we get to process our own ideas by writing them out… and sometimes having others comment on them.
Any way…
You can’t choose to love. Not in the moment, any way. When Jesus says, “Love your enemies,” he gives us a nearly impossible command. Unless we are living lives which are continually being transformed to be more like Jesus, we cannot follow that injunction.
If someone comes up and spits in your face, at that moment you are either the type of person who can love the spitter or you are not. You can choose not to spit back; you can choose not to strike the person; but you cannot choose to love the person who spit in your face unless you are already the type of person who loves someone who would do that to you.
