One key thing I think is being “left behind” in all of the emerging/postmodern whatever you want to call it conversation is… the fact that we are eternal beings. With the abuses in eschatology rampant in the church, we seem to prefer to focus almost completely on the here and now. This focus is probably causing a situation where you can’t see the forest for the trees.
While the “Kingdom of God” is a large topic for thought in the emerging church, perhaps we are forgetting that the kingdom breaking in and being available now is the spreading of an eternal kingdom that one day will have no competing kingdoms.
I find myself more and more as an individual trying to evaluate my decisions based solely on the here and now. I feel the need from deep within to consider the long-term effects my decisions have on my whole person. I am an eternal being, and as such am constantly journeying towards infinity. How much will transformation upon death or a return visit of our lord actually change us? Will we all be the same? Will the transformation have much to do with the person we actually are in the here and now?
These are questions which I can find no answers. And while I would like to have answers, I would at least feel a lot more comfortable if the questions were a part of my thought processes on a daily basis. I don’t have answers, so I’ll just let it go as the questions for now…
