BBC NEWS | World | Americas | Court takes on Commandments case
Something I thought might be of interest to some of you who visit.
Here’s what I think: I don’t really care. I think the Christian right has gotten so offended and sidetracked that they’ll say this thing is the real problem. I thought it was the oppressed, the weary, the hurting, the mourning we should be caring for. Maybe if we have everything stripped away we hold dear, we’ll wake up to the real problems. Government and the courts are not the answer. And removing the ten commandments doesn’t mean we’re on a downward spiral, it means are culture is more and more pluralistic, and just maybe it is respectful to those of other religions to not have one (or two) religion’s documents hanging from the walls of government buildings.
Is it possible we could be actually doing the right thing if we suggest the removal of the 10 Commandments? if the Christian church could ever really be unified, I think the best thing to do would be for the church to stand up and say, “Out of respect for others, we feel that these words which we fiercely believe to be true should not be positioned in facilities of a government which holds people of many faiths.” That would be the right thing to do. And then forget about it and go help the needy.
