a different perspective from alan hartung on the emerging church, politics, faith, and life

So is it really a wasted vote to vote third party? I don’t think so.

Was it a wasted vote to vote for Walter Mondale over Ronald Reagan when it was clear he didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell to win? That is the reasoning of why you are throwing away your vote for a third party candidate right? They can’t win! So you’re wasting your vote.

By that same reason, I’m in California where Bush has no chance to win. Not that I would any way, but wouldn’t a vote for Bush be a “wasted” vote, too? Well maybe, but not for the reason we’re talking about here.

A candidate’s ability to win the election is only one factor in many when you are deciding who to vote for. For me, I have decided one more person voting third party is a much better vote than placing a vote for a guy I don’t like (insert either name of the two “real” candidates here).

If you don’t like either Kerry or Bush, do the United States a favor and vote for a third party candidate. Until the stigma about third parties is removed, we will never see a third party candidate in the debates, on the ballot in every state, and viewed as a true presidential candidate.
